Frequently asked questions

Do I need an EORI number even for a one-off shipment?

Generally yes — an EORI number is needed to move goods commercially between the UK and other countries, whether it's a one-off or a regular movement. Check gov.uk: get an EORI number for current rules, including any UK/EU-specific numbers you may need.

Can I do my own customs declaration instead of using a broker?

Technically yes, if you have access to HMRC's Customs Declaration Service and the right software — but most individuals and small businesses don't, and the paperwork requirements are detailed enough that mistakes are common. That's why most people appoint an agent. See our checklist.

Who is legally responsible if my customs declaration is wrong?

Per gov.uk, you (the importer/exporter) remain responsible for exercising due diligence over your declarations, even when an agent files them for you. Whether the agent shares liability depends on whether they're acting as your direct or indirect representative — always get this confirmed in writing.

How long does customs clearance usually take?

It varies by route, goods type, and whether documents are correct and complete on first submission. A straightforward declaration with all paperwork in order is typically processed quickly; missing or incorrect information is the most common cause of delay. Ask your broker for a realistic timeframe for your specific route.

Do I need a customs broker to move house between the UK and Poland?

Household removals can often use a simplified "personal effects" customs procedure, but it has conditions attached (e.g. how long you lived where, timing of the move). Most people use a specialist familiar with this specific procedure — see providers who handle UK–Poland removals.

What's the difference between a customs broker and a freight forwarder?

A customs broker/agent focuses specifically on customs declarations and compliance. A freight forwarder arranges the physical transport of goods and often customs clearance too, either in-house or via a partner broker. Many UK providers do both — worth asking directly what's included.

Is there an official government list of customs agents?

Yes — gov.uk maintains a free register of customs agents and fast parcel operators. HMRC explicitly states this listing is free, and any request for payment to be added is fraudulent.
